Year in Food & Music

The Year in Food & Music

ANDRE TORREZ

December 12, 2014 Colby Mancasola
andre-torrez

Andre Torrez is an entertainment, travel and culture journalist living in the Bay Area.

What was the food highlight of your year?

Eating at Nido in Oakland struck a chord with me having recently traveled to Mexico City more than once in the past couple of years. I've read their cuisine focuses more on Puebla and some of the country's west coast locations, but these people really know what they're doing. The aroma when I walked in immediately took me back on my trip, to the cafes, food stands and eateries I encountered along my way. I had their pozole (probably one of my all-time favorite soups), but was able to snag some of my friend's Huarache Distrito Federal from her plate. The corn masa was rich and had a mild sweetness, while the double meat topping of carne asada and chorizo along with egg and black bean should have seemed out of control--it's really wasn't. With fresh onion and cilantro rounding out the reasonable portion, this is definitely a dish I want to order when I go back.

I'm really into simple and established places that demonstrate longevity rather than a lot of these flash-in-the-pan restaurant concepts that tend to capitalize on a food trend or the pretense that being hip or exclusive should equal success. Honorable mentions for some of my favorite 24th Street haunts include; Torta Gorda's Pambazo (chorizo, potato, lettuce and sour cream on a greasy roll). Taqueria Vallarta's taco bar (about three of them with a Mexican Coke does the trick; any delicious meat selection from their massive, round plancha will do.)

Finally, I got turned on to Mariscos Sinaloa #1 taco truck in Oakland. Ceviche tostadas and carnitas tacos with a healthy dose of pickled jalapenos and carrots make for a perfect hood of a car in the parking lot picnic!

What was the music highlight of your year?

Seeing Ronnie Spector headline this year's Burger Boogaloo at Oakland's Mosswood Park was like a dream come true. I got to interview her ahead of the show for the Bay Area Reporter. She called and we talked over the phone for like half an hour. I had just read her autobiography, so seeing her perform in such an unusual setting was really special for a lot of people I'm sure. The vibe that night suggested that she really wanted to be there and still had a lot to offer as far as stage performance goes. The audience was captivated (a grown man was reported to have had tears streaming down his cheeks) and loved everything about her set, chock full of back-to-back Ronettes' hits.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Locally, SoMa Streat Food Park's collaboration with VICE Noisey and Jansport on one of their Bonfire Sessions was pretty cool. What's not to like about seeing Meatbodies whip their hair and shred after I was satiated by a delicious spicy curry bowl? They had a pretty sick sound system too, presumably paid for with all that corporate money. Sometimes you need perks like that after waiting in a line that ran down the entire block.

For the real deal of music and food matrimony, I had to travel 50+ hours on an Amtrak train (I had a voucher that was gonna expire) to Memphis, Tennessee for the 11th annual Gonerfest. I made the pilgrimage to garage-rock Mecca to see an insane three-day dream lineup of bands including; Ausmuteants, Protomartyr, Obnox, Nots, and The Rebel. These shows were definitely a sloppy good time, but the barbecue was just as messy. Places like Cozy Corner had my nose running from the heat and begging for more sliced white bread, Gus' Word Famous Fried Chicken seems to have earned its name (I tried deep fried pickles for the first time!) and Soul Fish serves up a mean deep-fried oyster po'boy. Memphians certainly have it good when it comes to their food and music scene and they like showing it off for the out of towners.

COREY FLEGEL

Corey Flegel runs the southern indie record label This Is American Music.

What was the food highlight of your year?

I ate some pretty amazing meals this year, but my staple of the summer was your basic bought-off-the-back-of-a-truck tomatoes with white bread, Duke's Mayonnaise, and a lot of pepper. I must have eaten about 300 of them. Sometimes I'd throw some bacon and Wickles Pickles on them just to get all fancy with it, but nothing beats a classic tomato sandwich.

Also, I have to extend an eternal hat tip to the outside meat Pulled Pork Sandwich and bag of Zapps lunch meal at the mighty Fox Brothers BBQ in Atlanta, GA. Always a favorite.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Getting to meet and see The Replacements at the Shaky Knees music festival in Atlanta last May. It was simply overwhelming to see them play, much less be in their presence for a good portion of the weekend. Tommy Stinson is indeed the coolest man in the universe. Also, Billie Joe Armstrong (who was playing with the Mats) told me that he's heard good things about our label that same weekend, and that was pretty mind blowing by itself.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Eating at Donanelle's in South Mississippi. My girlfriend and I were down in Wiggins, Mississippi that weekend celebrating my birthday and overindulging on God knows everything with some of my favorite friends in the world. It’s this total dive-y roadhouse steak joint in the middle of nowhere on Hwy 49 where the steaks are amazing and everything else is fried. Maybe the best thing about eating at this place is the super epic Classic Rock that gets blasted in there. All six of us place dollar bets on what artist will get played next; correct guesses take the pot and we keep drinking and listening until we basically fall out. It was and always is gloriously fun times. Lots and lots of .38 Special, Bad Company, Seger, with sprinkles of Steely Dan, Boz Skaggs, and Gerry Rafferty.

MATT COHEN

Matt Cohen is a Journalist, Associate Editor at DCist, and plays bass for the band Collapser.

What was the food highlight of your year?

Literally buying $80 worth of Trader Joe's snacks to drive across the country with a friend. We ate at a lot of great restaurants during the trip (Laramie, Wyoming's only vegetarian restaurant, other places), but Trader Joe's snacks are tops.

What was the music highlight of your year?

I was fortunate to participate in a thing called Call + Response this year. It's a semi-annual art show in D.C. that pairs writers with artists, with the artists creating something inspired by a piece of writing by the writer they've been paired with. This year, the organizers mixed things up a bit by introducing a musical element. Philadelphia's Restorations, one of my favorite bands, wrote and recorded a 12-minute instrumental track for the show, which was given to us writers as inspiration. The short story I wrote was probably garbage (haven't had the courage reread it since I submitted it), but to be involved in the project was incredibly cool. At the opening, Restorations performed the track live. The song and all the stories were published and package as part of a limited 7-inch. It was a huge honor to be invited to participate in such a unique project.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

This summer, some friends and I organized a DIY music and arts festival in D.C. called In It Together Fest. I can go on and on about what a raging success it was and how proud I am to have been involved, but I'll just sum it up with one spectacular moment: we concluded the festival at a skate park underneath a bridge in D.C. We partnered with Food Not Bombs to sell some grub to raise money for charity, had a skate demo, and live music. But the main event featured a buddy of mine jumping over 50 gallons of homemade ramen in a bathtub on his dirt bike, while another buddy shredded the National Anthem on guitar. 'Merica.

What was the food highlight of your year?

I finally made it down to Prince's Hot Chicken in Nashville which was by far the my favorite thing I ate all year. The hot chicken "scene" around the country seems to be growing bigger and bigger with every passing day, but this James Beard American Classic is arguably the best hot chicken I've ever had, due to a perfect balance of tenderness, spices and batter that work together so well. It's got a great atmosphere as well, but be prepared to wait 30-60 minutes since it's packed anytime of day.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Steve Gunn with a full band at Schubas in Chicago. Steve is an amazing guitarist and songwriter who has mostly been playing solo the past few years, but for this tour supporting his remarkable new album 'Way Out Weather' he had a full band that really gave the songs new dimensions in all the right ways.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

I made a last minute trip to NYC to see Yoko Ono backed up by Yo La Tengo at Union Pool in Brooklyn this summer as they rehearsed for their big Glastonbury show. Needless to say it was amazing to see Yoko in such an intimate venue/bar and Yo La Tengo as the Plastic Ono Band was phenomenal.

For the past six years every time I go to NYC I try to get a reservation at Momofuku Ko, but it has never worked out until this trip. Knowing that Ko was moving to a new space this autumn, I was so happy to experience the original location before they moved. Everything was delicious, but the cut of ribeye cap they had that night was by far one the best things I've ever eaten.

Chris Leo is a musician (The Van Pelt, The Lapse, Native Nod, Vague Angels), author of three novels, and recently left his role as sommelier at Pizzeria Mozza to start The Maritime Republic, an Italian beer and wine importer.

What was the food highlight of your year?

"Pisarei e Fasò", Antica Trattoria dell'Angelo, Piacenza. Gnocchetti partially made with reconstituted stale bread, cranberry beans, leek and celery based tomato sauce, wild mushrooms, parmigiano reggiano. Some "Pisarei e Fasò" call for a few eggs, lard, and butter but I have no idea where you'd put them. You drink gutturnio with it in opaque porcelain mugs because way back in the day the original "gutturnium" was a 2 liter chalice made of silver.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Watching Pony Bravo play to 2,000 happy Catalans in a public plaza in Gràcia at 2am. That band is everything I ever wanted to be in music yet could never find the balance nor execution they have: political yet fun, groovy yet with a home-made uneasy spirit.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Wine, music, and skateboarding. Giulio Repetto runs Green Records and a skate company called Murder out of Padova. In 1997 he booked an Italian tour of squats and pizzerias for my band The Van Pelt and came to all 4 of the shows. All will come full circle starting in the Spring of 2015 when I'll begin importing the entire line of his family's biodynamic estate in Piedmont, Cento Filari. Amongst the hits are a freisa, a chinato, and a pinot noir that tastes like what you wished a dolcetto tasted like.

Greg Jacobs has managed Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Big Drill Car, and Supernova; worked at SST, Cruz, and Cargo Records; and photographed musicians for print, TV, and the Death or Glory web series.

What was the food highlight of your year?

2014 is the first time that I realized why people love Prime Rib. Our friends were recently married and they served prime rib at the reception. It was catered by Johnny Rivera (of San Diego restaurants: Hash House Au Go Go, Tractor Room, Great Maple) and the food was stunning. The prime rib was cut thick and ate like a steak ... It wasn't thin and fatty and serviced on a plate of liquid ... It was awesome. Plus the roasted asparagus, mac and cheese and sausage skewers with pollenta cubes were great too. Not to mention the Old Fashioneds.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Bob Mould at the Roxy in Hollywood had to be the highlight of 2014 for me. I had seen Husker Du a few times back in the old days, but never saw Sugar or Bob Mould solo until this show. I was shocked at how many Husker Du songs were in the set ... Plus Sugar songs and his new stuff too. It was a great, well thought out set list that concluded with "Love is All Around" (Mary Tyler Moore theme song). Amazing.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Joe Jost's is a place where food and music come together for me regularly. Joe Jost's is the longest serving beer bar in Long Beach, CA - Open since prohibition was repealed, they are famous for their pickled eggs, hog dog sandwiches (called "specials"), roasted peanuts and of course, their schooners of beer. Whenever friends come up from San Diego to play at Alex's Bar (Hot Snakes, Night Marchers, Heartaches and more), we always meet at Joe Jost's before the show. There's nothing better than sitting with great friends over some pickled eggs and a schooner of Busch and catching up.

JULIA NAHMIAS WELLS

Julia Nahmias Wells is a Boston-area personal chef specializing in farm-fresh and seasonal fine comfort food under the name Food For The Band.

What was the food highlight of your year?

As always, working with fresh (and oft-times local) ingredients is the food highlight of my year! Locally-foraged mushrooms, Rancho Gordo heirloom beans, whole nutmeg, interesting varieties of produce one can't just pick up at a supermarket. Assisting with breaking down whole animals, patronizing area farms and farmer's markets, being really choosy with the elements I use to create dishes for my clients. I am really enthusiastic about the breadth of local offerings; creating relationships with farmers and area suppliers.

There's also the excitement I feel when traveling -- seeing other states/communities and their indigenous goodies. Something special about packing up to come home with me something I can't get at home -- my mind is usually already abuzz with how I plan to use it.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Having worked festivals in my past, I still maintain connections with band/tour managers, and it's fun to get the call that someone(s) is coming through Boston and has something in mind they'd like for me to prepare them; or has a special diet that general take-out can't satisfy. I dabbled in bands myself about a decade ago -- quickly realizing that I'm more useful behind the scenes -- and it's fun to still hobnob with those who belong in the spotlight.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

At the end of September my son was born. Those first days, as we both learned how to best get him fed, I kept Music Choice channels on in the hospital room. Feeling him respond to certain songs and artists (my kid relaxes to Prince, and soul) while we gazed at each other, bonded, snoozed, nursed -- it was magic.

Scott Heisel is managing editor of Alternative Press and the founder/owner of Youth Conspiracy Records.

What was the food highlight of your year?

My wife and I found a 10lb., uncooked prime rib in our deep freeze that was leftover from our wedding dinner two years ago. We thawed that shit out and had ourselves a feast, just in time for the season finale of 'Game Of Thrones.' It was probably my most epic meal of the year.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Weezer are my all-time favorite band, so any highlight this year is tied to them, from going on the Weezer Cruise in February to getting to interview them for the cover of AP in July to having their new album, 'Everything Will Be Alright In The End,' permanently glued inside my car stereo since its release (and I should point out that I bought it on cassette, because my car's CD player doesn't work but the tape deck still does).

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

It would probably be going out to dinner at Cleveland's finest grilled cheese establishment Melt Bar & Grilled the night before the inaugural AP Music Awards with a whole crew of musicians, record label folks and even pro wrestler CM Punk. Nothing like carbo loading with a massive grilled cheese sammy and some beer directly in front of your straight-edge idol!

Elizabeth Chorney-Booth is Calgary-based freelance writer. A former rock ‘n’ roll journalist, Elizabeth writes about food, local events, community, travel, business and other lifestyle topics for a number of magazines and newspapers in Canada and beyond. More importantly, along with fellow writer (and CBC radio columnist) Julie Van Rosendaal, she’s the co-editor of Rolling Spoon, a website that mashes up music and food culture.

What was the food highlight of your year?

I got to go on a culinary tour of Poland, which was really cool. Five days of eating sauerkraut and sausage. And I managed to pack in nine different kinds of perogies, which is a dream for a 1/4 Ukrainian girl from the Canadian prairies.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Seeing Neutral Milk Hotel on two consecutive night in Toronto this January. I bought In the Aeroplane Over the Sea the day it came out and never got to see them live. It was a moment that I thought would never happen and I was brought to tears several times during both concerts.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

We bring music and food together every day on Rolling Spoon and I love it when the musicians we talk to about food get really really into it. One of our biggest enthusiasts this year was the lovely Kelly Hogan, who loves food even more than I do. She sent in a recipe for her mother's habanero gold jelly, which my co-editor Julie made and it was beyond delicious. We also threw a really fun pie party to celebrate our first anniversary, where we had music booming and over 80 people came out to share pies that they'd baked. That was pretty cool.

Michael Davidson is an ex-scientist turned award-winning "Grilled Cheez Guy" and underground restauranteur.

What was the food highlight of your year?

The food highlight of my year was hosting an underground dinner on an old icebreaker ship in the SF port. We did an all seafood themed menu with a VIP molecular oyster and champagne floor overlooking the old Oakland wood dining table below. We feasted on local seafood while listening to sea shanties all night. Words and photos barely did justice and the experience was one that each guest will never forget.....

What was the music highlight of your year?

Going to Treasure Island Music festival this year for free and learning of Janelle Monae. What a beauiful and creative woman with a talented voice. She made my day and gave me a new Pandora station to expand my musical horizon with.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

The Behind the Cart dinner I mentioned. I always try and bring music to the table but nothing was more fitting then three people with accordions telling tales of the high seas while guests dined below on the ocean's bounty.

CHRISTOPHER CHAISSON

December 6, 2014 Colby Mancasola
christopher-chaisson

Christopher Chaisson lives in Holliston, MA and has been writing songs under the name The Young Leaves for over 8 years.

What was the food highlight of your year?

This year my band, The Young Leaves, went on a 30-day summer tour and I set out on a quest to find the BEST donuts ever. We passed through a lot of different cities with all sorts of "gourmet/artisan" donut shops and I tried them all. However, I found the greatest donuts in the entire world in Pittsburgh at a place called Better-Maid Donut Co. It's essentially this hole in the wall, ran by some huge Steelers fan who lives for nothing but donuts and football. There's nothing fancy about it, and admittedly the place looks like it hasn't been cleaned or decorated since the 1960's, but it's hands-down the best donut experience you'll ever have. It's old-fashioned, meaning he makes nothing but cake donuts, and he only makes a limited run per day. But again, I can't stress how incredible they are in their craft and deliciousness. I did the 13 for $5 deal and crushed all 13 donuts in about an hour. I felt sick, but in that horribly good foodie way. So worth it.

What was the music highlight of your year?

The musical highlight of my year was most definitely The Young Leaves summer tour. We went out for 30 days in June and played from Boston out to Minneapolis, down to Orlando, and back up (like a gigantic triangle spanning half the country.) For some, touring can be an absolute nightmare, but I adore it. If I had to chose a specific moment on tour that made my year it would be when we visited Springfield, IL for Dumb Fest 2. I had no expectations heading into it, but the whole thing ended up being a beautiful arrangement of music, skateboarding, and DIY culture. I had never been to Springfield before, but everyone was so ridiculously friendly and the bands were all fantastic; it was everything I love about "punk" or "independent" music or whatever. I hope they continue on with making it an annual thing, and maybe we'll play it again! Also, the band Looming from that area were great. I hope they're still doing their thing as well!

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

One of the best dudes I've ever met through music is a guy by the name of Matt Evans. He plays guitar in an awesome band called Old Flings and, in addition to being a great guy and songwriter, he also LOVES barbecue with a serious passion. He set us up a show in Asheville, North Carolina and when we arrived he had us hop in the bed of his truck and took us to a gas station. This was no ordinary gas station, though. It had a built-in BBQ dive with some of the most serious pulled pork and hush-puppies that I'd ever eaten. As with most barbecue, it's all in the sauce and that place delivered. Later on that night we ended up seeing Jim Wilbur of Superchunk at our show trying to help a band fix their broken down van. It was great. Just great.

Billy Barlow is a savory chef and butcher (The Breslin, Pulino's, Marlow & Sons, The Spotted Pig) turned ice cream maker at NYC's only certified organic ice cream company, Blue Marble.

What was the food highlight of your year?

I had my birthday dinner at Del Posto back in March. It was a great combination of having two of my very best friends there, phenomenal food and the pianist playing Cyndi Lauper. Dessert really blew my mind though. I have a sweet tooth, but I'm generally most interested in what happens in the savory portion of the meal. Brooks Headley's desserts just put the whole thing over the top like an exclamation point.

After Del Posto it would have to be the week I spent in Mexico. The whole time was spent on a very small island off the coast and the food was phenomenal. I'm not sure life gets better than eating fresh ceviche with sand between your toes and a cold beverage in your hand.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Unfortunately I don't get to see as much live music as I once used to, but I'm a huge fan of blues music. I've been listening to Ali Farka Toure and Bombino, and the intersection of American Blues with their traditional African music is pretty unbelievable especially when you're listening to Toure and Junior Kimbrough side by side.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Just a few weeks ago we took our management team to dinner at Speedy Romeo in Clinton Hill Brooklyn. It was a great soundtrack to accompany a delicious and fun dinner.

Close second place was sitting in Lexington Candy Shop having an afternoon breakfast while sitting under pictures of Woody Allen listening to the Rat Pack. To me that is a quintessential New York experience.

PETER ELLENBY

Peter Ellenby is a music photographer living in Portland, OR.

What was the food highlight of your year?

This year's Thanksgiving was the food highlight of the year for me. I love to cook the Turkey and this year we were going to do an eat all day buffet kind of thing so I needed to make a lot of bird. I brined two birds and roasted one in the oven. The second I did something I'd been wanting to do forever and cooked it with indirect heat from charcoal on the grill, also adding alder wood chips soaked in beer for smoke and extra flavor. Both of them were excellent and the one cooked outside was the crowd favorite. The brine recipe I used is my take on one from Chez Panisse that was published in the SF Chronicle years ago. I ad lib a lot when I cook but like a solid foundation. I also put pepper bacon on the each of the birds as they cooked. This adds amazing flavor and makes the drippings delicious. Plus you get to eat the bacon when it's done. Keep adding more and you get more bacon for the stuffing etc.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Music highlight of the year was seeing We Were Promised Jetpacks TWICE this year in Portland. Once at the Doug Fir and once at the Wonder ballroom. Such a great treat to have a band all the way from Scotland come and play for us twice in one year. They really play an amazing show and I was kind of going nuts at the Wonder show. Sorry if I pogo'd on your toes - Next time pogo with me, Portland!

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

HOLLY MUÑOZ

Holly Muñoz is a musician and songwriter from El Paso, Texas. Her 2014 solo album, Maps and Lists, was recorded with John Vanderslice.

What was the food highlight of your year?

I recently wrapped up a four-month-long national tour that involved one of me, dozens and dozens of house/backyard/church/record store concerts, hundreds of lovely people, and 26,000 miles on Pretty Bird, my diesel Volkswagen SportWagen. While I shared many meals with new friends along the way, my food highlight of 2014 was lunch with my pal from Rhapsody, Peter Hilgendorf and my bandmates, Melissa Eason and Debbie Neigher on the 75th floor of the Columbia Tower in Seattle: miso black cod on a bed of ginger soba noodles with cabbage slaw, a completely breathtaking 360-degree-view of Seattle, AND unlimited assorted cookies and coffee. Right?!

What was the music highlight of your year?

On the last day of my tour I performed live on-air with DJ Kevin Cole at KEXP in Seattle. I've been listening to this station and watching their archived in-studio performances for YEARS. To have the opportunity to do this felt like a dream. Everyone on staff and the volunteers helping out that day went out of their way to make me and my bandmates feel right at home. Kevin was beyond prepared for our interview and did a fantastic job of keeping me, a highly verbal and excitable human, on topic. And the highlight of the session, for sure, was dedicating a new song, "The Underdog" to my mother, who was listening from her home in Tucson, Arizona.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

At almost every show on tour I play a friendly game of trivia with the audience. Some of my questions have to do with the specific geography or history of the city I am visiting, and the rest are related to Prince. For example, "Of Prince's many potent superpowers, which is most potent?" Correct answer: levitation. The winners of Trivia with HOLLY receive Fine and Raw Chocolate out of Brooklyn, New York, and it is suggested, although not required, that they share with others around them.

Josh Modell is Editor In Chief of The A.V. Club.

What was the food highlight of your year?

This is a damn hard question, but I think it's gotta be incredible meals at Next and Alinea that were four days apart. The Next menu (it changes three times a year) was "best of Trio," which is the restaurant Grant Achatz cooked at before he started Alinea. The preparations were considerably simpler than what he's doing at Alinea now, but just so incredibly tasty and balanced. But then going to Alinea four days later... I hadn't been in five years, and the menu was completely different and fun and slightly less stuffy than I remembered it. Highlight I think was this corn preparation that was basically like the best elotes you've ever had x1000, served in a husk whose silk had just been on fire. The aroma and the taste together were amazing.

What was the music highlight of your year?

I can't even remember what happened last month, man! Let's see... This sounds like a cop out, but we put on a really fun festival this year, so I got to see Death Cab For Cutie with Chris Walla one last time, along with other oldies like The Dismemberment Plan. Oh, and Jack White--who I haven't been all that interested in in recent years--put on a blazing live show.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

There's this guy who makes Ćevapčići, which are these crazy amazing Serbian kebabs, and basically only sells them at music festivals (as far as I know)... I was sad that he wasn't at Pitchfork Fest this year, but he was at Riot Fest, which was honestly kind of a highlight. (I'm getting too old for hanging around 50k 15-year-olds.) So I popped in for one afternoon, saw Superchunk, Naked Raygun, and Hot Snakes, got a yummy sausage and went home!
