The Year in Food & Music

JOHN DRAGONETTI

John Dragonetti has played in The Submarines and Jack Drag, composed music for film and TV, and recently produced Dylan Gardner's record for Warner Bros.

What was the food highlight of your year?

A Saturday afternoon drive to Hawthorne, CA. There's an Indo-Pakistani restaurant called AL-Watan that will blow the mind. I'm mostly veg but will make the occasional chicken exception when it comes to his place. It's the best tandoori anywhere in or near Los Angeles. I haven't had such a divine Indian/Pakistani food experience since my days growing up in Dubai. ...maybe in London. It's really magical. I'm getting separation anxiety just writing about it.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Hmmm... I feel like I go to the movies more than I go to shows these days. Probably the Postal Service show at the Greek. I hadn't listened to that album in years but the live show was really great. Gibbard and Tamborello are an awesome team. The Neutral Milk Hotel show at the Bowl was killer too.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

The journey to Al-Watan also included a stop at the Beach Boys monument in Hawthorne. It's a weird little thing where their house used to stand.. but the freeway runs through it these days. Of course food and music are inseparable when it comes to touring. For better or worse. A couple of my favorite stops are the Red Iguana in Salt Lake City and The Grit in Athens, GA.
