Year in Food & Music

The Year in Food & Music

HOLLY MUÑOZ

December 4, 2014 Colby Mancasola
holly-munoz

Holly Muñoz is a musician and songwriter from El Paso, Texas. Her 2014 solo album, Maps and Lists, was recorded with John Vanderslice.

What was the food highlight of your year?

I recently wrapped up a four-month-long national tour that involved one of me, dozens and dozens of house/backyard/church/record store concerts, hundreds of lovely people, and 26,000 miles on Pretty Bird, my diesel Volkswagen SportWagen. While I shared many meals with new friends along the way, my food highlight of 2014 was lunch with my pal from Rhapsody, Peter Hilgendorf and my bandmates, Melissa Eason and Debbie Neigher on the 75th floor of the Columbia Tower in Seattle: miso black cod on a bed of ginger soba noodles with cabbage slaw, a completely breathtaking 360-degree-view of Seattle, AND unlimited assorted cookies and coffee. Right?!

What was the music highlight of your year?

On the last day of my tour I performed live on-air with DJ Kevin Cole at KEXP in Seattle. I've been listening to this station and watching their archived in-studio performances for YEARS. To have the opportunity to do this felt like a dream. Everyone on staff and the volunteers helping out that day went out of their way to make me and my bandmates feel right at home. Kevin was beyond prepared for our interview and did a fantastic job of keeping me, a highly verbal and excitable human, on topic. And the highlight of the session, for sure, was dedicating a new song, "The Underdog" to my mother, who was listening from her home in Tucson, Arizona.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

At almost every show on tour I play a friendly game of trivia with the audience. Some of my questions have to do with the specific geography or history of the city I am visiting, and the rest are related to Prince. For example, "Of Prince's many potent superpowers, which is most potent?" Correct answer: levitation. The winners of Trivia with HOLLY receive Fine and Raw Chocolate out of Brooklyn, New York, and it is suggested, although not required, that they share with others around them.
