Year in Food & Music

The Year in Food & Music

GREG JACOBS

December 9, 2014 Colby Mancasola
greg-jacobs

Greg Jacobs has managed Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Big Drill Car, and Supernova; worked at SST, Cruz, and Cargo Records; and photographed musicians for print, TV, and the Death or Glory web series.

What was the food highlight of your year?

2014 is the first time that I realized why people love Prime Rib. Our friends were recently married and they served prime rib at the reception. It was catered by Johnny Rivera (of San Diego restaurants: Hash House Au Go Go, Tractor Room, Great Maple) and the food was stunning. The prime rib was cut thick and ate like a steak ... It wasn't thin and fatty and serviced on a plate of liquid ... It was awesome. Plus the roasted asparagus, mac and cheese and sausage skewers with pollenta cubes were great too. Not to mention the Old Fashioneds.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Bob Mould at the Roxy in Hollywood had to be the highlight of 2014 for me. I had seen Husker Du a few times back in the old days, but never saw Sugar or Bob Mould solo until this show. I was shocked at how many Husker Du songs were in the set ... Plus Sugar songs and his new stuff too. It was a great, well thought out set list that concluded with "Love is All Around" (Mary Tyler Moore theme song). Amazing.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Joe Jost's is a place where food and music come together for me regularly. Joe Jost's is the longest serving beer bar in Long Beach, CA - Open since prohibition was repealed, they are famous for their pickled eggs, hog dog sandwiches (called "specials"), roasted peanuts and of course, their schooners of beer. Whenever friends come up from San Diego to play at Alex's Bar (Hot Snakes, Night Marchers, Heartaches and more), we always meet at Joe Jost's before the show. There's nothing better than sitting with great friends over some pickled eggs and a schooner of Busch and catching up.

Emily Hobson has worked at several music technology companies and can occasionally be found spinning vinyl in her hometown of San Francisco.

What was the food highlight of your year?

Bar Tartine’s Fermentation feast with Sandor Katz, author of Wild Fermentation and The Art of Fermentation. The Fish stew there continues to be one of the most comforting dishes in town.

State Bird Provisions opened in January and has been a delight to visit all year long. The concept is perfect for sharing and they never fail to send out amazing food.

Even after two years, Bar Agricole continues to produce amazing and food and drinks. Everything is super-fresh and thoughtful without being precious.

The prevalence of purslane all summer long on nearly everything.

Boot and Shoe Service’s great brunch.

Turnip soup at Comstock Saloon‘s Friday (free) lunch.

Portland Cocktail Week. It’s like to a music festival but totally focused on spirits and community.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Bob Mould plays Sugar’s Copper Blue at Bottom of The Hill
Other Lives at Great American Music Hall
Sharon Van Etten/The War On Drugs at The Independent

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

It turns out combining food, music, and the outdoors can be a winning combination. Who knew? Most of my memorable combinations of food and music arrived in a variety of excellent outdoor settings.

Two shows at Mountain Winery: Blondie/Devo and Go-Go’s/Psychedelic Furs pre-show tailgating at Mountain Winery. A beautiful view followed by great music at a stunning venue.

The Woodist Fest, Henry Miller Memorial LIbrary, Big Sur and the two day picnicking in the redwoods.

A hillside picnic at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass for Nick Lowe.

The confluence of food, wine, and music and sun at The Huichica fest. Our host cracked open a bottle of 1969 Lanson Champagne for breakfast to kick it all off.

New Order at The Fox followed by snacks and cocktails at Flora.

KEVIN SECONDS

December 21, 2012 Colby Mancasola

Kevin Seconds has fronted hardcore pioneers 7Seconds for 32 years. He also tours and records as a solo artist.

What was the food highlight of your year?

New China Restaurant in the Pocket area of Sacramento. The best veggie chinese food anywhere. They’re reasonably-priced and I ate there about 150 times this year.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Seeing bands like X, Hot Water Music and Fucked Up a good amount of times throughout the year. Seeing Bob Mould and Superchunk once. Touring solo a ton and some amazing 7Seconds shows both here in the states and in Europe.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Europeans know how to feed and take care for weary and hungry musician visitors. At every festival and club date 7Seconds played over there this year, we ate some of the best homemade food we’ve ever eaten. American promoters, TAKE NOTE!

Peter Ellenby’s twenty years of photographing bands like The Flaming Lips, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse, and Bright Eyes in small clubs is the subject of the book, Every Day Is Saturday.

What was the food highlight of your year?

Eating the bone marrow at RN74.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Bob Mould playing Copper blue at Bottom of the Hill during Noise Pop.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Noisette was amazing. Watching Ian Marks from the Beast and the Hare butcher half a pig was pretty cool. Eating what he did with the meat was better.

When I was shooting Bob Mould and his band for their Silver Age promos we walked past Olivier’s Butchery in Dogpatch. Bob says “Oh. Is this a butcher?” I confirmed that it was indeed and he proceeded to go inside and buy three or four amazing looking steaks. I’m sitting there thinking to myself “Oh my god, I’m watching Bob Mould buy steaks!”

MIKE JONES

December 2, 2012 Colby Mancasola

Mike Jones ran Schizophonic Records and NAIL Distribution before joining A to Z Media which provides “bespoke” packaging for bands like Sigur Ros, Best Coast, and OFF!

What was the food highlight of your year?

Discovering St. Jack, a new French Bistro that opened in Portland this year and having a feast there with a big group of friends including Tim Bierman from the 10Club and Nicole Cifani of MoheakRadio in LA where we all shared many dishes and wines and desserts and talked about music and food for hours.

What was the music highlight of your year?

Being asked to be an extra in Bob Mould’s video, The Descent. Having the opportunity to meet one of my musical heroes and taking part in his career for a micro-moment this summer was really special for me.

Was there a moment when food and music came together in a memorable way?

Immediately following the video shoot. I had dragged my 14 year old son, Max, along with me. He plays trumpet in the marching band at his high school and is a bit of a foodie (totally without pretense, though). I told him that after we were done I would take him to have the best hamburger of his life at Little Bird here in PDX. We wrapped, and after giving Mr. Mould a lift back to his hotel, Max and I sat down for a satisfying 11pm meal at the aforementioned Little Bird and I would have to say that the burger, ordered medium rare, blew his young, musical mind. A great evening.
